today i'm reviewing the top 200 tracks of the p2k decade in music
in reverse alphabetical order, because that’s how itunes decided to arrange them. asterisked tracks are ones i’d never heard (because they slipped by me or i deliberately ignored them.)
here’s the first 50, chik to p.
!!! - me and giuliani… / awful disco fetishistic extended intro/outro. how am i supposed to dj over it on my ipod? there’s a catchy dance track at the core of it though.
50 cent - in da club / boring beat, awful mc.
yo la tengo - our way to fall / nice, peaceful indie rock.
*yeah yeah yeahs - maps / nice enough indie rock. not sure if i’m sorry for ignoring this band.
xiu xiu - love the valley oh / would be a huge track if he played the vocals cooler. but then it wouldn’t be xiu xiu.
*wolf parade - i’ll believe in anything / good track, like the way the vox go “ra ra, ra ra, ra ra, ra ra.”
wilco - poor places / nice peaceful indie rock
wilco - jesus, etc / could do without the fiddle
white stripes - fell in love / haha remember the garage rock revival? ok so it’s a catchy choon.
white stripes - dead leaves… / oh man remember the white stripes?
white stripes - seven nation army / this was definitely a popular song.
*walkmen - the rat / so i heard there’s this band called the strokes that’s pretty big
vitalic - la rock 01 / french electro: still a good idea.
*vampire weekend - oxford comma / bland indie rock. remember when people would write songs like this but they actually knew how to write songs?
usher - yeah / YEAH!
ugk - int’l player’s anthem / like an infant on the dd-titty
*tvotr - staring at the sun / when’s the beat going to come in? why won’t they rock out? band in need of a drummer here.
*tvotr - wolf like me / so they do have a drummer. these guys are too cool for their own good. should take a lesson from xiu xiu.
*the tough alliance - silly crimes / awful 80s fetishism.
three 6 mafia - stay fly / how could anyone listen to this and then include 50 cent on their list?
*ted leo - where have all the rude boys gone / is it 1982? where’s billy idol? i thought this was going to be about ska?
talib kweli - get by / this is the way all “conscious” rap should be done
t.i. - rubber band man / great, catchy beat
t.i. - what you know / this beat still gives me chills
*sufjan stevens - chicago / pretty nice chamber pop
*sufjan stevens - casimir s. pulaski day / is this a big black cover?
the strokes - someday / more lou reed than lou reed
the strokes - the modern age / curious why this over “last night” or “hard to explain”
*the streets - weak become heroes / awful flow. british people should not rap.
spoon - the way we get by / meh.
*spoon - the underdog / sure. this is catchy enough.
sigur ros - svefn-n-englar / it’s sigur ros. this is a good thing.
the shins - new slang / natalie portman aside, this is a pretty good pop tune.
shellac - prayer to god / how could anyone listen to this and then include jack white on their list?
santogold - l.e.s. artistes / catchy stuff. “i’m a lady” would have been my pick.
*robyn - with every heartbeat / why the strings?
*robyn - be mine! / eh.
rihanna - umbrella / great pop track
rapture - house of jealous lovers / this blew my mind the first time i heard it
radiohead - idioteque / this blew my mind the first time i heard it
radiohead - everything in its right place / intro still gives me chills
radiohead - pyramid song / sort of bored with this track. would have picked something from in rainbows.
r. kelly - ignition (remix) / booo-ring
queens of the stone age - no one knows / i remember thinking the first time i heard this, “well it’s cock rock, but at least it’s somewhat interesting.”
*pulp - sunrise / sorry i cannot listen to jarvis cocker. next.
the postal service - such great heights / oh man, remember 2004?
portishead - the rip / what a weird album this was. great track.
*pipettes - pull shapes / oh god why?
phoenix - if i ever feel better / french disco pop: still a good idea.
