Why not a Jazz Hero, asks this writer? Hmmm. Are there any music games which reward improvisation over accuracy?
i’ve only played it a few times, but the rock band game occasionally asks you to “solo” ad lib., your playing then judged i believe by the shear number of notes inputted in the allotted time — pretty hilarious as a musical concept.
the problem with jazz hero is we can’t even define good improvisation as humans, let alone describe it in terms a computer could evaluate. the only way to become a jazz hero is still buying a cheap horn from a pawn shop and learning to blow.
…
i want to make an “ambient hero” game, in which the object is to play as few notes as possible. maximum score acheived by turning off the tv and taking a nap in the backyard.
