So this got me to thinking . . . what if machines do have a subconscious of their own? What if machines right now are like human babies, which have brains but no way of expressing themselves except screaming (crashing)? What would a machine's subconscious look like? How does it feed off what we give it? If machines could talk to us, what would they say?
- Douglas Coupland, Microserfs
We live in a time where people say things like “you have to respect my hustle”. Fuck your hustle, no one cares about your hustle. Be better or go away. When rap music was good nobody ever talked about the size of their hustle. It seems like you might be overcompensating for something.
I say the new hot insult is “Your hustle is showing” the way Charles Barkley used to say “never let ‘em see you sweat”. If we can all see your hustle, you’ve already fucked up, like a magician who can’t pull off a trick.
Your hustle is showing when you’re selfish. You type the same self-promoting message over and over on Twitter.
Your hustle is showing when your hard work is being wasted. You have “blog buzz” but no one knows your music because it isn’t any good.
Your hustle is showing when you worry too much about branding. You say your name all over every verse and close every show with your myspace url. If you’re a blogger you watermark photos and videos.

we can talk about this, it’s OK.
The most recent findings looked at the link between personality traits of people and their lifespan. The data showed that certain personality traits were definitively linked to a longer life, including emotional stability, organisation, discipline, conscientiousness and resourcefulness.
Certain other traits led to a shorter life: anger, emotional instability, anxiousness and depression, among them. The study concluded that “longevity was associated with being conscientious, emotionally stable, and active”.
And sitting there, looking out over the rooftops of Boston, I thought about all the hard work — all the crap I put up with in jr. high school — from all those jerks who peaked in 11th grade and spent their time trying to come up with new ways to make me feel miserable, all the bad times, and how everything just seemed right now to be exactly where it should be. neil was right.
Life is really wonderful.
Work hard, believe in yourself, enable your dreams, seek out creative people. Hang on. Tenaciously. Always be a force for good.
